This project brings NGOs and government officials together with private sector corporations to develop partnerships that address social issues affecting women, including family violence.
The program brings added value to the ongoing work in Jordan by highlighting path-breaking models used with considerable success in the United States. A public-private partnership model supporting women's issues will be created, piloted in Jordan and then shared with additional countries in the region.

This funding supports the second phase of the program. This project builds the capacity of Arab women NGOs and groups in the three sub-regions of the Middle East and North Africa region to launch and participate in campaigns to reform family laws. In the first phase, a model “toolkit” by the founders of the family code movement in Morocco was created to go beyond documentation and provide strategies and tactics on “how” the women in Morocco created a reform movement to achieve their successful outcome -- reform of the Moudawana.

This program focuses on family law reforms in Bahrain and Kuwait. Country experts evaluate and assess legal practices in these Gulf countries concerning the family code and women's rights. Together with key local women's groups, they produce and distribute women's rights advocacy manuals in an effort to both strengthen the case for reform as well as create a unified voice for change. The goal is to help the women who are leading the charge harness opportunities for reform and achieve their goals.

This cutting-edge program supports the development of a model tool kit by the founders of the family code movement in Morocco to be shared with reformers across the region. The program supports the production of the tool kit that will go beyond documentation by providing strategies and tactics on how the women of Morocco operationalized this movement to achieve their successful outcome--reform of the Moudawana. Numerous activists from across the region contacted these leaders to learn how they did it; this program captures their intellectual property, organizes it and scales it.
Promoting the Human and Legal Rights of Moroccan Women

This program trains non-governmental organizations in rural Morocco to educate women on their legal rights and how to advocate for them, with a particular focus on the family code, the Moudawana. Training seminars are held for illiterate women throughout Morocco; a women's human rights resource center is operating and expanding, with more than 1,450 multilingual, multimedia resources; and a weekly e-newsletter is distributed.

This project in rural Morocco raises public awareness and educates community leaders, local and regional law enforcement and other officials about the implications of the new family law in Morocco. It is raising awareness of Moroccan women concerning their rights and responsibilities under the new law through coaching, workshops, seminars and grant support to Moroccan women's NGOs. The program is increasing understanding by local government officials and professionals in regional and rural areas about the new law through NGO activities targeting public officials such as magistrates, police, teachers, and social workers who will be key in educating citizens about the reforms and creating institutions that allow Moroccan women to exercise their new rights.
Model Schools and Educational Advocacy for Girls

This program identifies, trains, and supports local non-governmental organizations across Morocco in communities suffering from high drop-out rates to reach girls who otherwise would not have gone to school. Ten homes have been established to ensure that more than 200 girls have safe and culturally acceptable living quarters near their school. The program supports a national advocacy campaign to improve the quality of education for girls focusing on improving the gender sensitivity training of Moroccan teachers.

The program works with the secretariat for literacy in an initiative to develop literacy training materials that convey in a simple way the concepts of the family code. The goal is to make the Moudawana more relevant to the daily lives of the women in the classroom.

The program builds the capacity of public and voluntary institutions in Jordan to develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to prevent domestic violence, sexual abuse, and honor killings. It supports the expansion of the Jordanian government's awareness raising program to promote a human rights-based approach within the judicial system. The project also supports efforts by Jordanian organizations to develop innovative and exceptional media programming and use new media approaches to expand popular support for women's rights.
